OUR STORY

25 years with humpback whales

Swimming with Gentle Giants was built around a simple idea: to bring people closer to humpback whales in a way that creates understanding, connection and respect.

For 25 years, we’ve returned to Vava’u, Tonga, following the annual migration of humpback whales into these warm South Pacific waters.

More than 1,000 days on the water later, we’re still captivated by what happens next.

25 YEARS IN TONGA

A story shaped by whales

Every year, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from their Antarctic feeding grounds to the warm waters of Tonga.

Here, they mate, give birth and spend the first weeks of their calves’ lives before beginning the long journey south again.

Swimming with Gentle Giants was created to experience this remarkable part of their lives differently. Not from a distance. In the water.

Over the years, we’ve watched generations of whales return. We’ve encountered mothers resting with newborn calves, curious juveniles, singing males and competitive groups moving through the islands.

And we’ve learned that the most memorable encounters are rarely the ones you can predict.

BUILT ON EXPERIENCE

Experience changes how you see them

After more than 1,000 days on the water, you learn to pay attention.

To the way a whale moves. The relationship between a mother and calf. The change in behaviour when a whale becomes curious. The moments when it is better simply to watch.

That experience shapes the way we run every expedition.

We keep our groups small. We spend meaningful time on the water. We work with experienced local operators and guides. And we approach every encounter with the understanding that we are entering the whales’ environment.

ON THEIR TERMS

The whales lead

We can choose where we search. We can read the weather, the water and the behaviour in front of us. But we cannot control a wild animal. And we wouldn’t want to.

Every encounter happens on the whales’ terms. Some are fleeting. Others become moments you will remember for the rest of your life.

Our role is to create the opportunity, understand what is happening and help you experience it respectfully. The whales decide the rest.

LEARN. OBSERVE. EXPERIENCE

More than swimming with whales

Seeing a humpback whale underwater changes the way you understand them.

Throughout the week, our team shares knowledge of whale behaviour, migration and photography, helping you understand and anticipate what you’re seeing.

The camera is always secondary to the experience.

You arrive hoping to see whales. You leave knowing more about them.

CITIZEN SCIENCE

A connection that contributes

Our relationship with Tonga’s humpback whales extends beyond our expeditions.

Individual humpback whales can be identified by the unique markings on the underside of their flukes.

Through the Tongan Fluke Collective, photographs can help identify individual whales and contribute to a growing record of the humpbacks that migrate through Tongan waters.

Images captured during an encounter can therefore become more than photographs.

They can help us understand who is returning, where whales are being observed and how this population changes over time.

IN GOOD HANDS

The people behind the experience

Swimming with Gentle Giants brings together people with extensive experience across wildlife, photography, marine environments and expedition guiding. But expertise is only part of what makes a good guide.

Knowing when to explain what is happening matters. Knowing when to stay quiet matters too. Our team is there to make you feel comfortable in the water, help you understand the behaviour unfolding around you and give you the confidence to experience each encounter properly.
